Paula Cooley is easily one of the most well known and respected ceramic artists on the prairies so I was thrilled to get her to give us a bit of insight into what's up coming in Saskatoon before the holidays.
Now that the holiday
season is fast approaching there is an abundance of open studios, markets and
pop-up galleries showcasing the wonderful talent in Saskatoon. There are far too many to list here so
I thought I’d share some of my favourite craft markets in Saskatoon that
feature ceramics and that I visit annually both as a marketer and a consumer.
First
there is the Artisan Fine Craft Market Nov 23-25th
at TCU Place. This is an intimate
and relaxed market with approximately 40 craftspeople selling fine craft. This market offers a fabulous
opportunity to see the work of and meet some of Saskatchewan’s most respected
craft artists.
And for those of
you eager for more clay that same weekend, the Saskatoon Potter’s Guild holds their annual Winter Sale on the Saturday and Sunday. Members of the Guild fill the third
floor of the Albert Community Centre with all variety of work and if you like
searching out treasures and bargains this is the sale for you.
The Sundog Arts and Entertainment Faire runs the weekend of Nov 30 – Dec 2 at
Credit Union Place. This is the
largest craft market of the season featuring over 200 artisans and you can
easily spend an afternoon, or longer, perusing pottery, jewelry, glass and many
other hand crafts. Comfortable
shoes are a plus!
Last, but
certainly not least, is the Winter Wonders Handmade Market
presented by the Flock and Gather Collective, Dec 7-8th, at St.
Joseph’s Parish Hall in the Broadway area. This is a marvelous little indie market showcasing the
diverse work of emerging and established craft artists and there is always
something to delight.
So this
holiday season take some time and discover, if you haven’t already, the amazing
artisans in Saskatoon!
Now there are a few events that Paula, likely due to being humble, has forgotten to mention. So i'll encourage you to go:
First there is the 330 Design Group Fall Open House which runs today and tomorrow. Check out their website for more details. And the Saskatchewan Craft Council will be hosting an exhibition called Creativity and Spirituality starting November 23rd. (check out Paula's beautiful piece on the exhibition poster!)
All in all a busy craft season around these parts. Thanks Paula for the guest post!
If you'd like to write a guest post for clay related events in your area please do!
