Craft and Sustainability

The Alberta Craft Council is hosting the exhibition:

Elemental Connections
An Exhibition of Sustainable Craft
July 12 - September 27, 2008

From their site: "The Alberta Craft Council in collaboration with the Ontario Crafts Council is pleased to present Elemental Connections, an exploration of the relationship between craft and sustainability. The works are selected by curator Arlene Gehring, with the intention of making space for craft makers, the public, and the OCC to address vital issues through craft media.

Elemental Connections, planned as part of Craft Year 2007, is one of the OCC’s signature exhibitions that situate craft as an essential component of Canadian culture. Questions of sustainability, environmental impact, and going ‘green’ are a concern for all Canadians. Placing craft discourse in the realm of this larger discussion brings the OCC closer to the issues affecting the community around us."

Please check out their website for more information.

Galerie Besson celebrates 20 years

It was years ago, back when I had just begun my love affair with ceramics that I was on trip to London and stopped in at the Galerie Besson for an exhibition of Lucie Rie's work. At the time I think I had a vague notion of how important she was in the wide world of ceramics, but I had just begun to scratch the surface of the medium and the wealth of amazing artists. I remember it being a beautiful little space, the sounds of the street chatter below wafting up. The gallery was filled with these amazing pots, one of which I couldn't help but to caress in my hands. Well if you're lucky enough to live in or be visiting London you should check out the current exhibition of Lucie Rie and Hans Coper.

The gallery is celebrating it's 20th anniversary and there should be some amazing exhibitions in store. Make sure to check out the upcoming exhibition:

Exploring colour in Porcelain at flow gallery

12 June - 6 September 2007

"Bringing together the work of seven international artists, Colourware showcases the beautiful and varied ways in which colour and form can combine in contemporary porcelain. From vessels, wall pieces and bowls, to china sculptures and installations, porcelain moves away from the traditional, muted palette to adopt vibrant colours and eccentric forms."

Don't miss checking out the other gallery artists...so much great work in one place.
